About this place

Among rock, forest and blue-green water, Pozo Azul unfolds as a series of waterfalls and natural pools connected by the river. Also known as Las Pailas, the site allows visitors to descend toward the lower levels by stairs and continue exploring other sections of the river with greater elevation changes. The visit combines scenic enjoyment, photography and time beside the water in the natural surroundings of Chiguirí Arriba. Its main appeal is not a single waterfall, but the sequence of levels forming different pools and cascades along the route.

History

The site has traditionally been known as Las Pailas, a name associated with the sequence of cavities and pools formed as water descends through the rocks. Over time, the name Pozo Azul became more widely used, referring visually to the blue-green appearance of its water. No official tourism opening date or specific heritage designation for the site was found.

Climate

There is no site-specific meteorological series available. As a regional reference for Panama's Pacific side, December through April is the comparatively drier period, while rainfall is more frequent from May through November. The recommendation to visit mainly between January and March is based on easier access along the dirt road and reduced exposure to heavy rain, not on a documented seasonal phenomenon specific to the waterfalls.

Area and surroundings

Pozo Azul occupies a section of river where several waterfalls and natural pools follow one another between rock and vegetation. The route includes stairs, elevation changes and areas close to the river channel. The lower section allows for a relatively short visit, while continuing toward other levels requires greater stability and care on wet or uneven surfaces. No official surface area for the attraction was found.

Nature

The natural landscape is defined by the river, pools, small waterfalls, exposed rock and tropical vegetation. The water can appear blue-green in different sections, but no scientific source was found that would justify attributing that color to minerals or any other specific cause. No biological inventory specific to the site was located either, so no particular plant or animal species are presented as confirmed characteristics of Pozo Azul.

Practical tips

Wear footwear with good grip, especially for stairs, wet rock and uneven sections. Bring drinking water and protection from rain and sun. Avoid visiting during heavy rain, as it can worsen access-road conditions and quickly change the river. No recent official assessment of pool depth, current strength or water quality was found, so visitors should not assume that every pool is safe for swimming or jumping.

How to get there

The area can be reached from Penonomé or from the El Valle de Antón area, continuing through communities such as Churuquita Grande and Caimito toward Chiguirí Arriba. The final approach includes dirt and rocky road sections, so a 4x4 makes it easier to reach the area near the entrance. With a sedan, visitors may be able to reach part of the route and continue by local transportation or on foot, depending on road conditions. No advance reservation, mandatory guide or special permit has been confirmed for an ordinary visit.
